John Russell

John A. Russell specializes in muscle physiology and movement science in the cranial sensorimotor system and how adaptation within this system can be measured and optimized. In particular, he examines muscle contractile and blood flow properties in muscles of the tongue and larynx and how these properties change with aging, disease, treatments for disease, and disorders. His current research focuses on muscle pathology in rat head and neck radiation, and how exercise or muscle stimulation programs modeled after those in current clinical use may modify muscle physiology and function.

Dr. Russell received his BS and MS in kinesiology from Kansas State University. After serving as a researcher in the Department of Surgery, Russell earned his PhD degree in communication sciences and disorders from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
