Department of Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery Visiting Student Scholarship

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Visiting Student Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Department of Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery, supports qualified 4th-year medical students in developing their clinical skills, abilities, and potential through a visiting rotation, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

The Visiting Student Scholarship supports an individual desiring a four-week visiting clerkship at the top-ranked otolaryngology program at the University of Wisconsin. Two scholarships, each up to $2,000, are available to cover fees, travel, housing, and transportation expenses associated with the visiting sub-internship.

ELIGIBILITY 

The Visiting Student Scholarship is intended to support students who identify with, but not limited to:

  • High level of financial need and/or
  • First-generation college student (neither parent received a baccalaureate degree) and/or
  • Students who contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the program because of their life experiences, including overcoming personal adversity or family hardship, records of extensive community service, or successful careers in other fields; and/or
  • Significant barriers to achieving higher education, such as experience in the foster care system, living in a single-parent household, having an incarcerated parent, or responsibilities for providing financial support or primary care for other household members and/or
  • Students from medical schools without a home otolaryngology program.

Candidates must ALSO meet the following requirements:

  • Plan to apply for residency in otolaryngology
  • Current student enrolled and in good academic standing at an LCME-accredited medical school in the United States, entering their fourth year of medical education
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents

Individuals from universities other than the University of Wisconsin are eligible for the program.

Scholarships are available for four-week rotations in July, August, September, October and November.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Interested students are required to submit an application which will include the following:

  • A 500-word or less personal statement describing how you meet the eligibility criteria and telling us why you would like to do a sub-internship at the University of Wisconsin Department of Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery.
  • Curriculum vitae

Note: Students receiving a scholarship will be required to apply as visiting students through the UW School of Medicine and Public Health VSLO.

The Medical Student Education Office in the Department of Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery will work with the recipient to identify a four-week period for the elective that fits the availability of the program.

Scholarship monies will be issued upon arrival.
